Yoga Basics - The Yoga Mat
By Sarah Freeland
Whether you are new to yoga, or a yoga master who has worn out their yoga mat; sooner or later you will find yourself looking for a yoga mat to add to your arsenal of yoga supplies. While many people have the misconception that they can just purchase the first mat they see. It simply isn't true. Unfortunately, some manufacturers of mass-produced yoga mats aren't concerned with the longevity of the product. Instead, skimp on the quality to get you to purchase them more frequently. Which of course can and will lead to a much higher bill, than if you would have just spent a little more time and money in finding the perfect yoga mat. Not to mention the ability to purchase a yoga mat free of that rancid chemical smell. Of course, this means taking some time to do your homework before that big purchase.
Even if you decide to purchase a chemical laced yoga mat, there isn't any proof that it will cause health problems. However, I can tell you to keep them out of heat for too long. Anyone who is prone to headaches might not enjoy the smell that comes off of them when they are.
There are several different types of mats to look for when choosing that perfect yoga mat. Some being a jute or cork yoga mat. Which are extremely affordable, and are considered to be an earth friendly alternative to your mass-produced non-organic yoga mats. However, they can also come with some different drawbacks as well. They are both extremely porous mats. Which ultimately means they will absorb any sweat during your yoga classes. Of course causing them to be fairly un-pleasant to smell after a few months of use and can be fairly weak. However, despite the fact that they don't last a long time; they would be well-suited for someone that only takes a class once or twice a month.
The more popular rubber yoga mat, is by far a yoga practitioner favorite. They are known for their durability, low prices, and they are made out of a fairly sustainable material rubber.
However, when you are purchasing a rubber yoga mat; you might run into synthetically produced mats. So, if it is important to you to keep the earth in mind; keep a keen eye out for "naturally made" rubber mats. One other con is that they should be avoided at all costs if you are allergic to latex. Instead look for a phthalate free mat, which should help to ease and possibilities of an allergic reaction. So, as you can see despite the popularity; even the front-runner of yoga mats can have it's pitfalls. Despite the one downfall they are by far one of the most long-lasting mats on the market today.
The three popular types of yoga you may have heard of are hatha yoga, power yoga and bikram yoga. Hatha yoga is the style of yoga most practiced today. It is what you will think of when you think of yoga in general. Power yoga is a more aerobic-style yoga, with an emphasis on cardio.
Bikram yoga is a style of yoga performed in a heated room to accelerate detoxification. Universal Yoga sells everything you need to practice these and other forms of yoga, pilates and meditation including organic yoga mats, yoga bags, workout clothing, meditation cushions, uplifting apparel and yoga DVDs.

Yoga Apparel For Men
By Sarah Freeland
When it comes to yoga and men, most people don't associate them with one another. However, yoga isn't just for women! Just take a peek into local yoga classes, and you will see more and more testosterone taking these lessons. Remember, it is a means of relaxation that can help tone your body! Which of course has made it has become increasingly popular with the male population.
With this realization, many yoga specialty shops both online and locally. Have begun to offer a line of mens yoga apparel. While the yoga man in your life might not think that it is necessary to have specific yoga apparel, you know better. Your standard workout wear simply won't cut it! Even if you aren't pushed into buying yoga apparel, it is always a good idea to keep your yoga wardrobe stocked!
Many people have the misconception that there aren't many options for men. Quite on the contrary! You still have your standard yoga pant either snug-fitting or loose, as well as comfortable shorts, crop-tops, yoga inspired t-shirts, and sleeveless t-shirts. There is a plethora of options as you can see. Not to mention the variety of colors, cuts, prints that are available to you! Giving the variety of choices, ultimately leads to a yoga outfit for everyone! However, I wouldn't suggest stopping at just one. Instead you should decide on the number of yoga outfits you might need, by the number of times you will attend lessons in a week. If you are a die-hard yoga practitioner who insists on a daily session. I would suggest at very least three to four yoga outfits. While it would be easier to get one for every day to render laundry moot throughout the week. Three should be easy enough to maintain throughout your daily routine.
Whether you prefer a plain color pallet, or richly colored prints. There is something for almost every attitude of male yoga practitioner. The one pit-fall to mens yoga apparel, is that not many stores offer it. While it is easy to just pick up your standard t-shirt, they aren't made specifically for the yoga session. Which can ultimately mean you can't move correctly during your lesson.
Not to mention most yoga specialty stores will offer organic, or "green" fabrics. Which not only means you are dressed appropriately for your yoga lesson, but you are helping our earth as well. As you might know, that is one of the top priorities for yoga practitioners. After all, how can you practice yoga without the earth? Instead of searching everywhere, you should find a yoga specialty shop either online like this one or off to get those yoga staples.

Yoga Silk Eye Pillows
By Sarah Freeland
Despite what some non-practitioners might think, yoga focuses on both the body and the mind at once. Often times causing whoever adopts yoga as a way of life, to become more concerned with their body's well being. Of which gives you an edge in keeping sane within a stressful world. While you are able to de-stress without props or added help, it never hurts to have a helping hand when trying to keep yourself sane.
One of the most popular relaxing objects around these days is still the silk eye pillow. While they have been used for many years, they are now making a huge comeback in the world of yoga.
While some are simply used to block out the light, others are lightly scented for aroma therapy. The aroma-therapy silk pillows are often times used as a holistic healing method. Offering you the ability to simply melt away the concerns of modern living with the calming and realigning nature of the silk eye pillow.
Whether they are treated with the sweet scent of chamomile or lavender, they are utilized to refresh your soul. However, some retailers offer them in a wider variety of aroma-therapy scents than simply lavender. Another of the most popular scents is peppermint to refresh your senses.
However if you are sensitive to aroma therapy you may wish to obtain a silk eye pillow that isn't scented. All of which are available at holistic retailers such as this one. One thing that they all have in common is the way that they are made. While they can be found in several different refreshing colors, most of them are subdued to invite the sensuality of darkness.
All silk eye pillows can be found filled lightly with flax seed. Of which will help it to relax into the contours of your eyes; caressing your skin and allowing you to relieve stress. It isn't used just for napping anymore. It can be used to help reduce your stress even during meditation. Especially since most people tend to meditate before the wee-hours of the night. Giving the much-needed darkness to truly clear your mind of every-day stressors.
Some people make the mistake in thinking that silk eye pillows are just for adults. Quite on the contrary! As there are many younger yoga practitioners, they can also benefit from silk eye pillows.

Organic Yoga Clothes
By Sarah Freeland
As you might have already learned through your yoga class, organic living is extremely important to your health. Despite the world's obsession with mass-produced items such as clothing, there are harmful chemicals that are use to preserve clothing. However, the yoga lifestyle promotes the use of organic ("green") materials. Not only does purchasing organic promote a healthier lifestyle for yourself and your family, but the world around us as well.
While the chemicals used in traditional clothing isn't well known among the community. Health and world conscious people have begun to research the effects of mass-produced clothing on health and our environment. All of which are turning to materials that are farm raised (or grown or produced) without the use of chemicals. Many of our clothes are laced with countless hundreds of pesticides and herbicides (along with other harmful chemicals) that can indeed harm your very well being.
For this reason, a few companies in the United states, Turkey, and India have begun to produce organic apparel. Of course yoga wear isn't left out of this amazing progression in the production of clothes! Yoga apparel is bountiful in organic cottons and other materials. Giving you a leg-up in keeping your body free of chemicals during your yoga session.
Not only are you doing your mind, body, and soul a favor in purchasing organic yoga clothing.
But you are helping to free our environment of chemical residues and are reducing the exposure of other people and animals to harmful chemicals. As you can see there are many benefits to purchasing organic yoga clothing. Not only for you but everyone around you.
The one complaint that many people have about organic clothing as a whole. Whether it be your normal clothing, infant clothing, or yoga clothing; it can tend to come with a slightly higher price. However, let us go through the reasons that the cost may be a touch higher than mass-produced clothing. Organic yoga clothes are made with care. Each plant or material lovingly grown and processed without chemicals. For this reason it takes organic producers longer to tend to their product; thus making it more cost-effective to charge slightly more. However, the cost difference doesn't out-weigh the benefits of organic clothing. So, the choice is simple! Purchase organic yoga clothing instead!

Yoga Exercise - March to a New Age With a Daily Meditation Practice After Yoga Exercise
By Heather Greaves
"People get ready, there's a new age coming, you don't need no baggage you just get on board."
What 3 mistakes prevent us from dropping mind baggage and moving forward to a new age easily and with courage? How can a daily practice of yoga exercise and meditation bring courage?
Mistake #1 - Pointing Fingers - Whenever you are uncomfortable, unhappy or upset you point fingers and blame other people. Consider this. If someone else is responsible for the way you feel, then isn't it up to that person to take those feelings away? You are actually carrying those folks with you. Whenever you blame someone for your troubles, your troubles instantly become heavier than they actually are.
Solution: Take personal responsibility for your response to what is happening. Make the decision to take responsibility. "I take full responsibility for my response to this situation." Yoga Exercise: Breathe deeply for as long as it takes to come to accept this thought. Assume correct posture to increase breathing capacity as well as gain a courageous feeling. Start a daily meditation practice of at least 3 minutes of breath awareness.
Mistake #2 - Constantly Making Comparisons - You keep comparing yourself to other people and feel you are less than others. You don't know your own strengths, or you forget to recall them. Instead you keep focusing on your weaknesses. Or on the other hand, you feel you are better than others. You keep seeing others weaknesses, as you take pride in your strengths. You create so many extra thoughts. Baggage!
Solution: Consider that each individual has a special place in the universe, a unique part to play, and gifts and talents to play the part. Yoga Exercise: Practice 3 fundamental principles of yoga (self discipline, self-study, and surrender to the divine) to see reality. Be firm about your daily meditation practice, and journal on your experience, and/or read an inspirational book.
Mistake #3 - Thinking Your Thoughts Are Okay - You think that because no-one can know your thoughts, it is okay to think whatever you want. You think your criticisms, finding fault, and other judgements affect no-one, and therefore it is alright to secretly entertain these thoughts. Through the senses the mind gives a running commentary and is bombarded with thoughts constantly. More baggage!
Solution: Put a full stop to your thoughts, and practicing calming the mind. Yoga Exercise: A daily meditation practice that controls all senses.
And now, I'd like to invite you to claim your free instant access to a special daily meditation practice for a courageous spirit when you visit http://www.yogatogo.com/. You can practice this meditation right into the new age.
Please share your thoughts on these mistakes. I'd like to know. Thanks.

The Top Five Yoga Accessories
By Dan Tien
Once you have selected a high-quality yoga mat, you may be wondering which accessories or yoga props will help you improve and deepen your yoga practice. We cover the five most important yoga accessories: bolsters, straps, blocks, mat bags, and mat cleaners.
Yoga bolsters provide extra support in difficult poses. They are basically stuffed cushions or rolls, and come in a variety of shapes, sizes and materials. A single bolster may be used in a variety of ways, supporting the head and neck in one pose, supporting the back in another, and stretching the abdomen yet another pose. Bolsters are commonly used in the "restorative" varieties of yoga, such as Kripalu. Many bolster options are available, including rectangular and round shapes, cotton, organic cotton, or hemp covers, and foam or organic cotton filling.
Yoga straps, also called yoga belts, are useful for developing flexibility. They can help beginners to transition into certain poses that would not otherwise be possible. One common use is a hamstring stretch, in which the yoga strap is hooked around the foot while the leg is held straight. They can also assist in bound poses such as cow face, or Gomukhasana, if your hands are not able to naturally clasp each other. Yoga straps are commonly available in materials such as nylon and hemp, and often have buckles on the end to aid in storage and transportation.
Yoga blocks are props to help improve your alignment and make you more comfortable during practice. They can be made of a variety of materials, such as eco-friendly cork and bamboo, or more conventional foam. Blocks are often used during standing poses in which one hand is on the floor, and can be great transitional aids while you develop your flexibility. Some poses also make use of sitting on a yoga block. Yoga blocks are often sold individually, but we recommend buying two for the most versatility.
Mat bags are useful for convenience and helping to protect your mat and yoga accessories. Depending on how much you carry back and forth to class, you may want a small mat bag that is sized slightly larger than your mat, or a larger, duffel-style mat bag that can carry extra supplies: yoga blocks, towels, water bottles, extra clothing, etc. Some people choose to make their own yoga mat bag out of silk or other materials - there are many great resources online that give instructions on how to do so. Ready-to-buy yoga mat bags are made out of materials such as nylon, cotton, organic cotton, or hemp.
Yoga mat cleaners are also very important. After regular practice, a yoga mat can become a breeding ground for bacteria, fungi, mold, and mildew. According to the New York Times, some dermatologists and podiatrists say that in the past two years or so, they have noticed a rise in the number of skin infections in their patients who practice yoga and use public mats. You do not need to use harmful chemicals to clean and sterilize your mat, however. There are some great natural choices available, using natural oils and plant extracts that thoroughly clean your mat. You can use a mat cleaning solution that you put in your washing machine, yoga mat cleaning wipes, or cleaning sprays that can be wiped down with a towel.
YogaTrader.com strives to provide quality, eco-friendly yoga and meditation products at excellent prices. We provide yoga mats, yoga accessories, yoga clothing, meditation supplies, and natural home products.

What is Hatha Yoga Devanand?
By Henry Alzamora
Hatha Yoga can boost our health, can help to overcome diseases same as preventing them, yoga asanas which are physical postures can easily overcome serious ailments and illness such as Acidity, Arthritis, Asthma, Back Pain, Cold, Constipation, Coryza, Cough,Frigidity or Sterility, Diabetes, Gastritis, gout, insomnia, kidney problems, liver disorders, mental tension, nervous debility, nervous tension, obesity and so on. Hatha Yoga Devanand is a discipline designed to obtain the highest level of training through psycho-physical exercises, breathing, concentration, visualization, relaxation, asanas (fixed postures) and a balanced diet. This discipline has a direct positive effect on the functioning of the cardiopulmonary and cardiovascular systems, muscle strength, resistance, flexibility, agility and physical composition. It is a system of complete detoxification and purification.
Designed by the Great Yogi Sage Swami Guru Devanand Saraswati Ji Maharaj, its main purpose is to give the individual the opportunity to obtain and maintain a healthy mind and body. This program is regarded as one of the best physical training disciplines to assist in the treatment of illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis, tuberculosis, diabetes, obesity, headaches and many other symptoms and conditions. In addition to these advantages, our program is very useful in fighting infectious diseases such as AIDS, since it improves the overall functioning of the immune system.
Although the practice of Hatha Yoga has become very popular in the United States, it is important to note that Hatha Yoga should be practiced under the direct supervision of an experienced and certified instructor. The practice of advanced postures (asanas) without prior preparation might affect the functioning of the nervous system, resulting in physical and mental traumas.
The Hatha Yoga Devanand program designed by Swami Guru Devanand consists of three levels:
FIRST LEVEL
Body-Mind Exercises (Pre-Asanas) - 6 months to 1 year
Basic concentration, relaxation, mind-body balance and breathing techniques. Understanding of the benefits and contraindications of each of the 14 exercises that make up this level. Orientation aimed at the prevention of disease to obtain an optimum level of health through each exercise.
To obtain better results it is necessary to follow the directions of the Hatha Yoga Devanand instructor diligently in this, as well as in the other levels.
SECOND LEVEL
Basic and Intermediate Asanas - Minimum of 2 years
The student acquires greater mind-body control and balance, a higher level of flexibility, resistance, breathing capacity, relaxation and discipline. This level consists of 50 asanas that help to detoxify and purify the nadis (energy channels) and the blood, regulating the functioning of the endocrine glands.
For this level it is necessary to follow a natural and balanced diet, breathing control and mental training through Mantra Yoga Meditation, in addition to a complete mastery of the First Level of Pre-asanas.
THIRD LEVEL
Advanced Asanas - 3 to 5 years
Advanced mind-body control. Increase in the levels of flexibility, resistance, breathing capacity, relaxation and physical detoxification. This level concentrates on asanas considered by Swami Guru Devanand as the most important. When the students follow the instructions of the Hatha Yoga Instructor faithfully, they will obtain true peace, love and harmony, thus filling their life with happiness.
Note: None of the information on the Hatha Yoga Devanand Program is to be considered as medical advice. The benefits attributed to the practice of Yoga have been documented throughout time, are based on a direct personal experience, and come from centuries-old traditions. Results will vary with individuals. Consult your doctor before beginning this or any other exercise program.

Yoga - A Natural Path For a Slim Body
By Pedro Daniel
In addition to all the mental and physical benefits, that hatha yoga has to offer to those who practice it with a serious diligence, it also has practical utilities such as helping us to lose weight, and once we achieve our desired goal to keep it for ever.
Yoga postures known as "asanas" in Sanskrit, are not simple physical exercises, as each of them directly affects several muscle groups, the internal organs and one or more endocrine glands. In addition, the practice with a concentration of the mind focused on a specific part of the body and breathing, it is of utmost importance to achieve the full benefits of the practice. We can read often that there is no yoga without concentration, and this is a great truth because although the physical benefits that yoga provides are wonderful, the ultimate goal of the practice is the conquest of the mind.
Basically and to help us with weight loss, yoga works on the glands, the metabolic rate, the calories expenditure, the flexibility and the work on specific muscle groups. The relax and peace of the mind also acts preventing the impulses to eat excessively and at unsuitable times. Let's see these topics in detail.
Glands: Certain yoga positions called of "inversion postures" have the particularity to stimulate the endocrine system, especially the thyroid that is the key in regulating the human metabolism. Some of these asanas are the well-known "Sarvangasana -Shoulder Stand" and the "Matsyana - Fish Pose". Some masters say that the thyroid gland is the "bull" of the body, because is the responsible for directing the hormonal function, and therefore maintain the metabolism in a perfect balance. This gland produces hormones that govern the basal metabolism, which is the amount of calories the body consumes daily to maintain the body functions such as breathing, digesting food, eliminating waste and sleep. By doing yoga regularly the thyroid finds its balance, secreting hormones in the right way and helping us with weight loss.
Internal organs: Besides strengthening the muscle groups, the yoga postures stimulate the internal organs such as stomach, intestines and liver. By allowing the energy to flow naturally, the functions of assimilation, digestion and elimination are normalized, facilitating the process to lose weight.
Muscles: Yoga tones and develops all the muscle groups, building long and lean muscles that burn calories also if you are resting.
Calories Burning: Contrary to the general thinking, in a yoga class you may burn between 250 to 400 calories. Because the hatha yoga has the advantage of revitalizing the body, you can practice every day and never feel tired as with other activities. For our weight loss goal, the best time for the routine is in the morning, because your metabolism will be activated during all the day and you will burn more calories in this way.
Peace of Mind: The concentration during the exercises and the relaxation, creates a mental climate very stable, that leads into a more thoughtful attitude in all areas of your life. This environment of physical energy and calm is very effective to avoid bad habits linked with food.

Yoga Exercises - Self Mastery Through Understanding the Mind and Practicing Yoga Exercise
By Heather Greaves
Do you know you have more than one mind? We know the mind can drive us nuts, and yet in spite of the spinning, you can act with self mastery with the help of yoga exercises.
You actually have 3 minds: a Negative, Positive and Neutral mind. They are all there to work with you and for you. They work together and just like muscles, can be strengthened with yoga exercises, like poses, meditation and relaxation. And by the way the mind is not you.
Negative Mind
"Negative" doesn't mean that there is something wrong or pessimistic with this mind. The Negative mind is there to warn you, to protect you.
Yoga Exercises: Appreciate the disciplines
Positive Mind
The Positive mind is creative, expansive. It gives inspiration, shows the benefits of the situation,
the pros.
Yoga Exercises: Strong poses and positive affirmations
Neutral Mind
The Neutral mind assesses both negative and positive input received. Then can bring clarity and wisdom.
Yoga Exercises: Meditation
Example
Recall a day when there was what is called active weather: a snow, or rain storm, and you had to make a decision whether to leave the house or not. Here's how the minds could work.
The Negative mind would be careful: let's stay in and just wait and see. The Positive would say, yes, the weather is active, so take an umbrella, or wear a warm coat. Let's go.
The Neutral mind could say: the reason for going is important, and it can wait for tomorrow; or it could say today is still a go because....
Here's an example of the minds in overdrive. The Negative mind goes spinning: "And remember the storm 8 years ago, you were caught and had to spend hours trying to get home." Then the Positive mind picks up this spin and confirms "yes, it did happen and to people in some other part of the world." Malfunction.
To develop self mastery and the neutral mind practice being an observer. Get to the neutral mind before you act on the thoughts given by the other two minds. Sometimes we say it this way, I have to clear my head. You can practice being an observer while in deep relaxation.
The point is, the more relaxed and aware of the present moment you are, the more you will experience self mastery and your neutral mind will be ready, willing and able to serve you, its master.
And now, I'd like to invite you to continue to explore this topic of Self Mastery through our free e-course. You can indicate your interest by joining our newsletter/blog list at http://www.yogatogo.com%22/

Talking Shop With a Yoga MasterBy Aadil Palkhivala
I was born in Bombay to a family of lawyers. I started my yoga training with BKS Iyengar at age 7 and by age 22 I was the youngest student to earn an Advanced Teacher Training Certificate.
As a child I was taught the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother of Pondicherry, both of whom are my spiritual teachers, along with my wife Mirra, who teaches Purna Yoga Meditation. I became a lawyer, certified naturopath, Ayurvedic practitioner, and a body worker. Mirra and I co-direct our studio, Yoga Centers, in Bellevue, WA, and I run a food company called Eastern Essence Organic Whole Foods.
I am often asked what it was like studying with Mr. Iyengar as a child. It was very intense. Iyengar is a very strict teacher-though not as strict now as he was then! Since I wasn't exactly born supple, I had to work really hard to get the movement he wanted. But he was more than just a teacher to me, he was also a friend. He would come over to our house, and we'd have breakfast and lunch and all that. Often he would stay at our house when he came to teach in Bombay many weekends. So we got to know the other side of him, which is one of the major reasons my family stayed with yoga. Had we only known him as the powerful teacher, we may not have continued, because his other side is very beautiful-gentle, sweet, childlike, full of fun, and loves adventure. Obviously my asana teaching is based on the Iyengar method.
I have a very firm belief that yoga is very vast. I cannot say this is my yoga and that is your yoga, because I believe that yoga is so big that we all have to share what we know. I believe that the blending of knowledge is very important without losing the essence of what you are teaching. I can't teach Ashtanga: I can't teach Viniyoga. But I can learn from them and see what is appropriate in my system. So that's what I do; I teach mostly physical yoga in the Iyengar method and the internal yoga is based on my wife Mirra's meditation teaching and Sri Aurobindo and the Mother's teachings.
A consistent question I get is how I find time for my own practice with such a busy schedule.
There is just no option. Every morning I get up, do my basic rituals, and then go and practice.
Practice is the first thing I do. If I miss the practice in the morning, I never practice! So it just goes without saying: I always do my practice first thing in the morning. People often ask me how my background in so many vocations affects my teaching. It really helps to have experience in different fields. Then, when you are teaching, you can tap into the different experiences and use language that resonates with different people. For example, one of my greatest loves is poetry-and I'm talking about classical, gorgeous, romantic poetry from Browning, Milton, Keats, Byron.
And when I quote these, it makes a huge difference in class. Similarly, if I use a legal term or an anatomical term, it resonates with certain people, and it makes the class richer. The best advice I can offer beginning yoga students is to find a teacher who truly knows the subject, which can be a tough thing because if you are a new student, you don't know if your teacher knows the subject. This is the main pitfall and the main joy of being a beginning student in yoga. It's a time to explore and find somebody who truly knows their job. And then stick with that teacher for a good five to ten years. And then, of course, yoga becomes one's life-long journey to internal revelation.

And then stick with that teacher for a good five to ten years. And then, of course, yoga becomes one's life-long journey to internal revelation.

Yoga For Women - How to Boost Your Energy at Home Using Five Easy Hatha Yoga Exercises
By Ntathu Allen
Are you a busy women and tired of being tired? Would you like to have more energy, fun and vitality? Have you thought of practising yoga, but feel you don't have the time or energy to go to a yoga class?
Working full time and raising a family requires a lot of positive energy. To maintain your energy it is essential you engage regularly in activities which nourish and nurture your soul; failure to do so leaves you feeling ratty and snapping at your children, always being late or feeling rushed to fit everything into your busy schedule..
As a working mother myself, with three teenage daughters, I know how challenging and weary life can be.
Yoga for woman is the ideal form of exercise to help you relax and nurture your soul.
The following five easy hatha yoga exercises offer you a simple and easy yoga practice you can do at home, in your own time. Regular practice will help you to stay active, relax and energised.
As with all forms of physical activity, especially if you have a medical condition or haven't exercised for a while, please consult your GP prior to exercising. Remember also to listen and respect your body. Always exercise within your own safety limits.
1. Downward- Facing Dog Pose (Adho Mukha Svanasana)
a) Begin on your hands and knees on All Fours.
b) Spread your fingers wide and press your hands firmly into the mat. Press your heels and feet downwards as you straighten your legs, lift your hips and tailbone to the sky. Lengthen your spine. So your body represents a V-shape. Let your head hang down and relax your jaw.
c) Stay in this position for three- five rounds of deep yogic breathes then slowly come out of the pose.
2. Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)
a) Lie on your belly with your hands flat on the floor, under your shoulders and legs straight out behind you close together. Press your feet and toes firmly down into the floor. Have your forehead resting on the mat. Breathe in and slowly raise your forehead, nose and chest up from the floor, keeping your hands down on the floor and press your hips on the floor.
b) Hold this pose for 3-5 rounds deep breaths, then slowly exhale and come slowly down.
3) Extended Child Pose
a) Start in a kneeling position, sitting back on your heels. If this feels uncomfortable, lace a folded blanket or pillow between your buttocks and your heels.
b) Breathe out and slowly lower your body forward until your head touches the floor. If your legs or back are stiff and you find it difficult to place your head on the floor without your hips coming up, make a fist with your hands, place them one on to of each other and rest your forehead on the top fist. If your stomach feels uncomfortable or gets in the way, just spread your feet apart.
c) Keep your buttocks on your heels. Stretch your arms out in front of you.
d) Each time you breathe out let your chest go closer to your knees. Keep your shoulders relaxed and take your arms back so your hands are close to your feet.
e) Stay in this position for 10 - 15 rounds of deep breathing.
f) Gently breathe out, slowly kneel up again and be aware of how you feel. Stay still for a few more moments before you get up from this position.
4) Wide Leg Forward Bend/Hands Behind Back
a)Stand with your legs and feet hip distance apart. Interlace your fingers behind your back. Gently bend forward. Stretch your hands and arms up and back. Gently breathe into the stretch. Slowly release your arms and come back to an upright position. Repeat 3 - 5 times.
5) Savasana (Corpse/Relaxation Pose)
Lie on the floor or yoga mat on your back, feet spread about 18" apart and hands about 6" from the sides of your body with palms up. Take a few moments to make sure you feel comfortable and relaxed in this position, make sure your body is symmetrical. Let your thighs, knees and toes relax and turn outwards. Close your eyes and breathe deeply, in and out through your nose. Remain in this position for 5-15 minutes. Gently open your eyes and roll over to your side before coming to a seated position.
As a busy working woman, regular yoga practice will help you to stay active, relax and energised through out your day. Let me know how you get on, I would be delighted to suggest further yoga postures you could do at home to help you relief stress and boost your energy.

A Good Pair of Men's Yoga Pants Are Essential!
By Sheryl Polomka
Let's be honest - a good pair of men's yoga pants really are essential for men that practise yoga. Although if you attend yoga classes you will probably find that it is predominantly women who practise yoga, there are many men who practise it also. And why not? After all yoga has many health benefits and they are for men as well as women.
So just as it is for women, it is also just as important for a man to be comfortable while he is practising yoga and this is why it is so important for them to have a good, comfortable pair of men's yoga pants.
Well, what else would they wear? Jeans? Work pants? Nope! Imagine doing yoga in your jeans - it would be uncomfortable, you wouldn't be able to bend and stretch all that well and you'd probably spend half of the class feeling uncomfortable and wishing you'd worn something else. When your mind is on your discomfort then you can enjoy the full experience.
Wearing comfortable men's yoga pants will let your mind relax and concentrate on the more important things - your yoga and your health. You will be amazed at how much difference it will actually make to your yoga lesson and the benefits you'll receive from it just by making this important wardrobe change.
So come on men - enjoy yoga, enjoy the benefits it will give you, but make sure that you get the most out of your lessons by wearing a good, comfortable pair of men's yoga pants.

Yes You Can Do Yoga - Why You Should Get Started in Yoga Practice Right Away
By Lena Morgan
Since its advent in the India of millennia ago, the practice of yoga has become popular all over the world and deservedly so. It's a gentle yet rigorous regimen that works to relax and energize the body. It also offers a number of unique benefits.
For one thing, it works on all parts of the body. While other exercises such as tennis are great for building up the arms and weight lifting the shoulders, yoga asanas (postures or positions) work on every part of the body both inside and out.
The gentle kneading and stretching exercises not only tone the joints and muscles but also work to stimulate the blood circulation. This combined with the squeezing and stimulation of the glands leads to a wonderful improvement in the function and health of the whole body.
This gentle nature of yoga makes it a suitable routine for people of all ages. Everyone from child to adult can practice yoga and reap its benefits. Children can start yoga as soon as they can walk. Working people can use yoga to kick start the day or unwind in the evening.
But perhaps yoga is most especially suitable for the middle-aged and elderly. Many of the postures and routines work to reclaim and retain youthful glow, energy and suppleness.
Also, unlike most other exercise routines, yoga is one form of exercise you can do anywhere.
Really, few health regimens are as easy to start as yoga. No need for fancy or expensive equipment, or special court, studio or stadium. And no need to invest in expensive uniforms or protective gear.
Indeed, one of its key pleasures of yoga is this barefoot informality. Just throw on shorts or leotard and a t-shirt and you're ready to go. However if you're not keen on being seen as hangovers from the hippie era and want to add a little chic to your yoga attire, you'll find some great trendy options for yoga clothes.

Talking Shop With a Yoga Master
By Aadil Palkhivala
How Yoga and Weight Loss Go Together
By Lynn Alex
You don't have to practice yoga to lose weight however yoga can facilitate the weight loss in many different aspects. In fact, if you love yoga and want to practice it - it might be the only thing you need to lose weight.
How is it possible?
Yoga includes postures (asanas) and breathing exercises. Together they form a powerful combination that helps to increase the awareness of our own body, relax deeply and connect with your Higher Self.
In order to start experiencing this, you need to practice regularly, at least 2-3 times per week, for 4-5 months. Self-awareness brings a desire to take a better care of the body; it also cultivates self-love. These inner psychological changes make it easy for you to follow any diet or exercise program without any effort because healthy, fit body becomes a new program engrained in your subconscious mind. This way you can lose weight effortlessly.
Another benefit of yoga is that yoga provides a gentle massage to endocrine glands and hence can help normalize hormonal disbalances in the body. These disbalances are often the reasons for weight gain.
Major energy centers of the body (chakras) are connected to major endocrine glands. The gentle massage that yoga provides for the body also improves the energy flow between major chakras and this is the reason why yoga promotes positive psychological changes that lead to effortless weight loss.
Yoga is also an excellent stretching exercise that incorporates resistance training (try Ashtanga or Power yoga); in addition it can also help to detoxify the body (try hot yoga or Bikram yoga).
Give it a try. If you persist you will reap all the benefits.

A Gym Floor Mat For Yoga
By Terry Grant
A gym floor mat made of rubber is an inexpensive way to introduce yourself to yoga. There's a common mistake with people who want to start working out at home that they need to go on a buying spree for gym equipment. Not so. That's exactly how many of those tele-infomercial machines for home gyms end up as expensive clothes drying racks standing off in the corner.
The best rubber floor mat you'll need for yoga is no larger than the top of your desk. There are two types of gym mats that should be mentioned: the thick and black kind that you use under home gyms, cardio equipment and weight racks; and the personal rubber gym mat that you see with yoga.
The yoga floor mat is designed to be lightly textured, and slightly tacky. Some mats are made of vinyl sponge foam but the best are made of natural rubber.
Yoga is one of the best gym exercises you can do on floors, available to every age and fitness level. It's flowing movements will stretch and lengthen muscle fibers causing the muscles in the back, legs, chest and arms, to become stronger and streamlined. In comparison, lifting heavy weight training can cause muscles to tighten, making them stressed and congested with lactic acid, and increases the load on your joints. Yoga, done on rubber or non-slip surface floor mats, will keep the body moving so the muscles stay warm and lubricated.
Any floor exercise that can be done on mats is all the fitness regime you'll need. Yoga is just one example, but then many floor exercises actually resemble yoga, and daily practice will better flexibility and strength over time. Even if you are practicing only the physical aspects of yoga, you will reap healthy benefits and leave each session feeling invigorated, having washed away stress and tension. So try out a yoga mat ($20 - $60), rent or buy a tape, and see how inexpensive, and fun, it is to start your own home fitness gym.

What is Tantric Yoga and How This Form of Yoga Can Benefit You
By Sheryl Polomka
Yoga works to benefit your body by balancing your body, mind and soul. The main difference between different types of yoga is the source that you aim to alter or perfect. Some yoga types benefit the mind, some have many physical benefits and some types have spiritual benefits.
Some techniques may have two of these benefits and some will benefit all three. The one technique that is the most difficult to learn, but also the most beneficial, is Tantric Yoga.
These techniques were derived from India thousands of years ago. The techniques have progressed over many years into its present form.
Tantric Yoga seeks to help the body as a whole and not just one single part of the body. You can compare this to a tree - instead of nurturing just one branch of a tree, you would want to nurture the full tree as a whole. It is only by nurturing the tree as a whole that it can flourish and grow strong. The same goes for your body, by using techniques that will benefit your body as a whole, mentally, spiritually and physically, that your body can truly flourish and grow strong and healthy.
The main goal with Tantric Yoga is to renew your spirit and mind by giving a spiritual awakening. A session will begin with meditation which aims to purify the mind. During this meditation you will visualise love and devotion and this will be directed to a body of light that is your soul.
This method of yoga is also known to benefit sexual function and stamina It really does offer quite a large number of benefits that other methods don't. So if you are looking for something different than a basic yoga workout and want to have a physical and spiritual workout, then Tantric Yoga may be just what you are looking for.
There are many benefits with practising yoga and if practised regularly you will enjoy a much healthier and happier life. To find out more about yoga visit Yojo-Yoga.com

Yoga Exercises to Keep Fit
By Daniel Carlin
Yoga helps to improve overall health and appearance. It helps to burn calories and brings flexibility in muscles. It is the best way to keep fit. If one practices yoga regularly, it results in a positive psyche on the mind.
The word 'yoga' is derived from the Sanskrit language meaning 'union'. It is a system where both breathing exercises and meditation are practiced. It helps to relax the body.
Anyone irrespective of his or her age & sex can practice yoga. The various asanas influence the mind & body in different ways. Hence, it is worth practicing yoga when one has some health problem or is suffering from some sort of stress.
Yoga has various styles that can be called 'hath yoga'. It contains yogasanas that include physical exercises, pranayama, breathing exercises and dhyana or meditation. People can choose asanas according to their preference that helps to improve flexibility, relaxation, & helps to build up stamina. Proper breathing & relaxing plays a very important role.
Other type of hath yoga is Iyengar which makes use of equipment like rollers, belts etc. For more physical effort one should choose ashtanga, which is power yoga. It is of a dynamic type that gives quick results but should be avoided by beginners.
Performing the different asanas in the proper way helps in the toning of muscles and stretching them. It firms up the body and improves stamina. It improves concentration, helps eliminate tension and reduces back pain.
Studies show that through yoga one can control diseases like depression, asthma, back pain, epilepsy, headache, heart diseases etc. It also helps in improving eyesight, height, balancing metabolism and helps to reduce weight. Regular practice of yoga enhances the energy level, relaxes ones mind and body and makes one feel younger.
Stress can be reduced to a great extent by the breathing exercises practiced in yoga. It helps improve concentration. To get rid of stress one can try Kundalini or Tantra.
One can start practicing yoga whenever and wherever according to their convenience. It is good if one takes the help of a yoga instructor. However if someone is not available, one can take the help of books, TV, or video. The benefits of Yoga are immense. One only needs to go ahead and start experiencing the same for themselves. .
It is important to note that yoga is not just a handful of physical exercises on meditation but it is thoroughly a new life style - a different way of living that includes change in the food habits as well. The diet should consist of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts; beans etc. The non-vegetarian items and the processed foods like refined flour, pizza, burgers and colas should be avoided.
Practicing Yoga is will not only help in keeping our body healthy and fit but will also help in developing a healthy mind.

Yoga and Weight Loss - Separating Fact From Fiction
By Chris Hunter
Lots of weird, seemingly complicated positions that rival the training exercises of a professional contortionist. A variety of breathing patterns that is too diverse to mater.
Philosophical principles that you must hold close to your heart, even if you fail to understand most of them.
Welcome to the wonderful world of yoga, a meditative and recreational exercise that became so popular in America during the so called "New Age" boom in the nineties. Today, yoga isn't only treated as a healthy way to commune with one's self, it is also being seen as a fantastic way to lose weight.
But can yoga really help you lose weight? Is this claim a fact? Or is it a lie propagated by a yoga studio owner?
Let's deal with the facts first and foremost: yoga is primarily a meditative process that helps participants commune with themselves and their environment. Yoga is all about breathing and positioning of the body to aid the same. Yoga is both a spiritual and a physical experience. It's ultimate goal is to improve one's health by cleansing one's system of all sources of pain and suffering. Such a release is called the Moksha.
Now for the biggest misconception about yoga and weight loss: yoga- particularly the "most active" kind, which is Hatha yoga - involves physical activities that will help you lose weight directly. This isn't true. Though yoga may entail demanding body positions, it is never physically taxing. Yoga exercises are not cardiovascular in nature. You won't burn that many calories while pursuing this meditative regimen.
Yoga is about changing one's lifestyle for the better. It's not about what transpires in the yoga studio, it's about what you learn during yoga sessions and how you follow the same outside the confines of the classroom.
Hence, yoga's weight loss benefits are never direct.
Instead, yoga teaches the participant how to live a healthier lifestyle and make him more aware of his body, which consequently will promote less weight gain and better weight loss.
Additionally, since yoga - in any of its form - will most definitely improve one's breathing patterns, the body will get to enjoy better oxygen flow. Oxygen is essential in every bodily function, including metabolism. Hence, better oxygen flow would mean a more efficient metabolic rate, meaning more calories burned and fewer fats retained.
In summary, it is wrong to enroll in a yoga class with the sole purpose of losing weight. That's like going to Paris just to see the Eifel Tower. Yoga has so much more to offer - eventual weight loss being just one of them - that will surely enrich the life of its practitioner.

Children's Yoga
By Sean Tearney
The power of yoga to improve the quality of life for our children is starting to dawn on parents throughout the western world. Although yoga has has been popular with adults for many years, only recently have kids yoga classes started to make their presence felt.
Children's yoga can increase self-awareness, build self-esteem and strengthen young bodies. It can help coordinate brain functions, balance right and left brain and aid relaxation. Yoga has also been proven to improve concentration, so around exam time a course of children's yoga sessions could make all the difference. Anxious children also see the benefit, so again, a children's yoga course around stressful times of the year could have a significant positive impact.
Although the benefits that children experience with yoga mirror the experiences many adults have with regular practice, you can't expect your five-year-old to hold the poses of an adult's class. Instead, the focus must be on play and fun.
Kids yoga classes use songs, music and stories to take children through the yoga postures of animals and nature. Sessions ignite the children's imaginations with well crafted tales of wondrous adventures; they become cobras slithering through tunnels, space men walking through the clouds, brave climbers of the highest mountains and swimmers diving through the oceans. Kids yoga must be daring, exciting and imaginative.
As well as the active yoga postures that work on strengthening the physical body, it's important to keep in mind the holistic nature of yoga which nurtures the mind, body, emotions and spirit of the child. For a children's yoga session to be balanced it is important to introduce calming and focusing techniques.
Breathing exercises see children becoming big balloons and filling up with air, then emptying slowly to extend the exhale. The rise and fall of their chest is the waves on the ocean. For older children alternate nostril breathing has a wonderful calming effect.
If there aren't any classes nearby, consider using a site such as
http://www.activeunlimited.com/ to arrange a private yoga session at your home. Private kids yoga classes can be tailored for your child and will fit around your schedule. Instructors come to your house at a time that works for you and the family. An early evening yoga class could make all the difference at bed-time!
Many parents use yoga to relax, refocus and de-stress. They are now starting to realise that if it works for them, it must work for their children. And if it works for their children, it automatically works for them!
Book private kids yoga classes for your child in your local area or join us as a private yoga instructor.
